Yang Li Breathes New Life into Embroidery with Leaf-Vein Art in Guizhou

In the heart of Tongren City, Guizhou Province, artist Yang Li is transforming the traditional craft of embroidery by integrating it with nature’s delicate canvas—the leaf vein. Drawing from the rich embroidery traditions of the Miao, Tujia, and Dong ethnic groups, Yang Li has pioneered an independent craft known as leaf-vein embroidery.

Each autumn, Yang Li ventures into the pristine forests of the famous Fanjing Mountain Scenic Area to collect leaves. Through an intricate process involving more than 30 steps of rubbing, washing, and drying, she extracts the leaves’ veins to create razor-thin sheets that serve as the foundation for her artwork.

Embellished with patterns of flowers, birds, mountains, and classic figures, these leaf-vein canvases are brought to life with vibrant embroidery. Yang Li doesn’t keep this art to herself; she organizes local embroiderers, teaching them the unique skills of leaf-vein embroidery. Together, they infuse traditional motifs with new vitality, preserving cultural heritage while fostering community involvement.

Embracing modern technology, Yang Li records videos of her work and shares them on social platforms. By showcasing the delicate beauty of leaf-vein embroidery to a broader audience, she not only promotes the craft but also opens up new opportunities for local artisans.
