Super Typhoon Yagi, the 11th typhoon of this year, made landfall in the Chinese mainland’s Hainan Province on Friday afternoon, prompting the relocation of 570,000 residents, according to the province’s emergency management headquarters.
Packing winds exceeding 234 kilometers per hour, the typhoon struck the coast of Wengtian Township in Wenchang City at 4:20 p.m. Local authorities reported that heavy rainfall has inundated most of the island, with severe rainstorms affecting several townships and villages.
The northern part of Hainan experienced fierce winds ranging from level 13 to 16, leading to power outages in some cities and counties. Emergency services are working tirelessly to restore electricity and ensure the safety of the affected communities.
According to the provincial meteorological bureau, Yagi is forecast to move toward the provincial capital of Haikou, as well as Chengmai and Lingao counties, before heading to the Beibu Gulf on Saturday morning. Residents in these areas are advised to take necessary precautions and stay updated through official channels.
The massive evacuation efforts underscore the typhoon’s potential impact and the authorities’ commitment to safeguarding lives. Travelers and businesses are encouraged to monitor the situation closely as transportation and operations may be disrupted.
