American tennis sensation Emma Navarro produced a remarkable comeback to secure her spot in the U.S. Open semifinals, defeating Spain’s Paula Badosa 6-2, 7-5 on Tuesday.
In a thrilling encounter between two New York-born players, Navarro showcased her resilience and powerful forehand to overcome a challenging second set and continue her breakout season.
“I felt much more comfortable coming into this match,” Navarro said. “I’m at the point in my career where I’m not scared of any result or making a run in any tournament.”
Navarro dominated the first set, consolidating an early break to take a commanding lead. Despite Badosa’s efforts to force a decider, opening up a 5-1 advantage in the second set, Navarro mounted an astonishing comeback. Winning 24 of the last 28 points, she sealed the match in just 72 minutes.
“After I got it back to 5-2, I had an inkling that it might be two sets,” Navarro added. “I wanted to stay tough and stick in there. I’m just really happy with my performance today.”
In other quarterfinal action, China’s Zheng Qinwen faced a tough opponent in Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, falling 1-6, 2-6. Sabalenka’s victory sets up a semifinal clash with Navarro.
Zheng Qinwen’s journey at the U.S. Open showcased her growing talent on the international stage, reflecting the rising prominence of Asian athletes in global tennis.
Navarro’s upcoming semifinal promises to be an exciting matchup, as both players aim to reach their first Grand Slam final.
