Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed readiness to enhance the traditional friendship between China and Gabon during a meeting with Gabonese President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema on Wednesday. The meeting took place in Beijing as part of the 2024 Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).
President Xi highlighted that the friendly and cooperative relations between China and Gabon have become a model for China’s relations with African and other developing countries. “China is willing to work with Gabon to create an even brighter future for our comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership,” Xi stated.
He emphasized China’s willingness to use the FOCAC summit as an opportunity to deepen cooperation in infrastructure, agriculture, health, and the digital economy, aiming to support Gabon in diversifying its economic transformation. Xi also expressed China’s intention to strengthen cooperation with Gabon in counter-terrorism and security to promote domestic stability and regional peace.
Gabonese President Nguema acknowledged the closeness of the Gabon-China relationship across all fields, noting that China is Gabon’s most important partner and has significantly contributed to the country’s development. He expressed gratitude for China’s support during Gabon’s political transition process.
“Gabon firmly adheres to the one-China policy and will work with China to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between our countries,” Nguema said. He added that Gabon and China actively cooperate under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative, continuing to deepen their comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership.
During the summit, both countries signed bilateral documents in areas such as investment, economic cooperation, and infrastructure development, further solidifying their collaborative efforts.
