Sudan Floods Claim 173 Lives and Displace Thousands

The Sudanese Health Ministry has reported that heavy rains and floods have claimed 173 lives and left 505 injured since the onset of the rainy season in June. The devastating floods have impacted 11 of Sudan’s 18 states, leading to widespread destruction.

According to the ministry’s report released on August 31, over 170,000 people have been affected by the floods. The natural disaster has destroyed 18,665 homes and damaged 14,947 others, leaving thousands homeless and in urgent need of assistance.

In Kassala State, the flooding of the Gash River has caused significant damage to agricultural lands and homes, threatening food security in the region. The situation worsened with the collapse of the Arbaat Dam near Port Sudan on August 25, resulting in at least 60 deaths and causing substantial damage to infrastructure.

The Sudanese authorities are mobilizing resources to provide relief to the affected regions. However, the scale of the disaster presents immense challenges for emergency services and aid organizations working on the ground.

As the rainy season continues, there are growing concerns about the potential for further flooding and the spread of waterborne diseases. The international community is being urged to support Sudan in its relief and recovery efforts to prevent a worsening humanitarian crisis.
