China Releases First Report on Xianbin Jiao Coral Reef Ecosystem Health

China has released its first comprehensive report on the coral reef ecosystem at Xianbin Jiao in Nansha Qundao, revealing that the ecosystem is generally healthy despite some localized damages.

According to the report released on Friday, a survey and evaluation were conducted from May to July 2024 by the South China Sea Development Research Institute of the Ministry of Natural Resources, in collaboration with the South China Sea Ecological Center, the South China Sea Survey Center, and other organizations.

The research team assessed the coral reef ecosystem at Xianbin Jiao, a significant feature of Nansha Qundao. The findings indicate that the ecosystem is “in a generally healthy state with local damages,” highlighting the resilience of the coral reefs in the face of environmental challenges.

Experts involved in the study emphasized the importance of ongoing monitoring and conservation efforts to protect the coral reefs, which serve as vital habitats for marine biodiversity and play a crucial role in the ecological balance of the South China Sea.

The report’s release marks a significant step in understanding and preserving the marine environments of Nansha Qundao. It provides valuable data for researchers, policymakers, and environmentalists aiming to promote sustainable development and environmental protection in the region.
