Wang Yafan and Zheng Qinwen of China Advance to U.S. Open Round of 16
In a thrilling display of determination and skill, China’s Wang Yafan secured her spot in the Round of 16 at the U.S. Open for the first time in her career. Wang triumphed over the No. 20 seed and former World No. 1, Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, with a score of 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.
The match showcased Wang’s resilience as she overcame an early deficit in the first set. Despite trailing 1-3 after being broken in the fourth game, Wang converted two crucial break points to reclaim the set. The second set saw Wang start strong with a break, but Azarenka fought back, winning four consecutive games to take the set.
Undeterred, Wang dominated the decisive third set, quickly building a commanding 4-0 lead. Although Azarenka managed to break Wang’s serve in the fifth game, Wang maintained her composure and aggressive play to seal the victory.
“We got to the third set and I knew I needed to play very, very focused,” Wang said following her win. She is set to face the No. 26 seed, Paula Badosa of Spain, in her next match.
Joining Wang in the Round of 16 is fellow Chinese tennis star Zheng Qinwen, marking a significant achievement for China’s representation in the tournament.
