Beloved Giant Pandas Ri Ri and Shin Shin to Return to China from Tokyo’s Ueno Zoo

In a heartfelt announcement, Tokyo’s Ueno Zoological Gardens revealed that their beloved giant pandas, Ri Ri and Shin Shin, will return to China in September. The news marks the end of an era for the zoo, where the panda pair have been cherished residents since their arrival from southwest China’s Sichuan Province in February 2011 under a leasing agreement.

Ri Ri and Shin Shin quickly became icons at Ueno Zoo, captivating visitors with their playful antics and contributing significantly to conservation efforts. In 2017, they delighted the world with the birth of their daughter, Xiang Xiang, who became an instant celebrity. Xiang Xiang was returned to China last year, continuing her journey in her ancestral homeland.

The panda couple made headlines again in 2021 with the birth of twin cubs, Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei. Born and raised at the zoo, the siblings have drawn panda enthusiasts from around the globe, strengthening international bonds through shared affection for these gentle giants.

Now both 19 years old, Ri Ri and Shin Shin are entering their golden years. Ueno Zoo officials have noted that the pandas have developed health issues, such as high blood pressure, common in pandas of their age. The decision to return them to China is motivated by a commitment to their well-being, ensuring they receive specialized care in their native environment.

“Ri Ri and Shin Shin have brought immense joy to visitors and have been invaluable ambassadors for wildlife conservation,” a zoo spokesperson said. “We are grateful for the time they’ve spent with us and look forward to their continued health and happiness in China.”

The return of Ri Ri and Shin Shin underscores the successful collaboration between Japan and China in giant panda conservation. Visitors are encouraged to visit Ueno Zoo in the coming months to bid farewell to the cherished pandas and celebrate their contributions to fostering understanding and appreciation for wildlife.
