Fiji’s Prime Minister Rabuka Seeks Stronger Ties with China Ahead of 50th Anniversary

As Fiji approaches the 50th anniversary of its diplomatic relations with China in 2025, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has embarked on a significant visit to the Chinese mainland, aiming to deepen cooperation and foster an “ocean of peace.”

During his visit, which included stops in Yunnan, Fujian, and Zhejiang provinces, and concluded in Beijing, Prime Minister Rabuka witnessed firsthand the achievements of China’s development and poverty eradication initiatives under President Xi Jinping’s leadership.

“President Xi is one of the world’s great leaders,” Rabuka remarked, reflecting on the progress he observed. He expressed a desire for Fiji to modernize at its own pace, inspired by China’s successes while acknowledging his nation’s unique path.

A keen environmentalist, Rabuka emphasized the importance of environmental stewardship, acutely aware of the threats posed by climate change to island nations like Fiji. “We will not over-exploit our resources,” he pledged, underscoring his commitment to sustainable development and a harmonious relationship with the environment.

The Prime Minister’s visit symbolizes the enduring friendship between Fiji and China, with Fiji being the first Pacific island nation to establish diplomatic ties with China. Over the decades, both countries have supported each other, setting an example of equal treatment and friendly cooperation between nations large and small.

As the anniversary approaches, Rabuka looks forward to strengthening ties with China, focusing on mutual respect, shared prosperity, and peace. His vision for an “ocean of peace” reflects a commitment to regional stability and cooperation in the Pacific.
