As natural disasters increasingly impact communities worldwide, China and the Pacific Island countries (PICs) are forging a stronger alliance to tackle these challenges head-on. The recent establishment of the Center for Disaster Risk Reduction Cooperation marks a significant milestone in this collaborative effort.
In February 2023, the center was inaugurated in Jiangmen City, south China’s Guangdong Province, becoming the first multilateral cooperation platform between China and the PICs focused on disaster prevention and mitigation. The center aims to provide the PICs with advanced disaster risk monitoring, early warning technologies, and support in post-disaster emergency response.
“We have conducted training programs for officials from disaster management departments across nine Pacific Island nations,” shared Wang Chunyang, the executive dean of the Pacific Island Countries Research Institute. “Our research delves into the types of natural disasters affecting these countries and explores effective prevention and mitigation strategies.”
The Pacific Islands, situated along a volatile volcanic and seismic belt, frequently face typhoons, earthquakes, and tsunamis. These natural disasters can last for extended periods, sometimes exceeding 100 days, posing significant risks to lives and property. Recognizing these challenges, researchers at the center have developed comprehensive plans addressing both pre-disaster preparedness and post-disaster recovery.
“We leverage meteorological satellites and related technologies to provide early warnings before disasters strike,” explained Huang Hui, a researcher at the institute. “After a disaster, we focus on coordinating supplies and logistics using big data technology and establishing emergency stations in the affected areas.”
Through this enhanced cooperation, China and the PICs aim to jointly address natural disasters and associated risks, safeguarding communities and offering valuable experience for international disaster prevention and humanitarian efforts. This collaboration not only strengthens regional resilience but also sets a precedent for global partnerships in disaster management.
