Table tennis champions Zhang Bian and Wang Rui are poised to represent China at the 2024 Paris Summer Paralympics, each sharing how the sport has profoundly transformed their lives and propelled them to the pinnacle of athletic achievement.
Zhang Bian: A Legend Continues
Paralyzed by polio at the age of two, Zhang Bian discovered table tennis in 2003. Over the past 21 years, she has become a towering figure in the sport, capturing seven Paralympic gold medals and inspiring countless others with her unwavering dedication.
After the Tokyo Games in 2021, Zhang contemplated retirement as younger athletes emerged, challenging her dominance. Yet, stepping away left her feeling empty. “I have won three double titles, and to me, this means a lot and has exceeded many people’s dreams,” Zhang reflected. “Looking back, I felt very miserable and tired at that time, but now I think it was nothing.”
Undeterred, Zhang decided to continue her journey. “Many young players said, ‘You have won so many medals. Maybe you can give young people a chance, and let us also chase medals.’ I said, ‘Young players, you can compete, but I want to realize the value of my life.'” With Paris 2024 on the horizon, she is determined to reach new heights.
Wang Rui: Rising from Adversity
Wang Rui, a TT7 para-athlete, lost her leg in the devastating 2008 Wenchuan earthquake. Turning to table tennis offered her a new beginning. Her talent and perseverance earned her a place on China’s national team, where she became a Paralympic champion.
As she approaches her third Paralympic Games, Wang is driven by unfinished business. “I have some regrets in the table tennis singles events from the last two Paralympics, as I did not get the results I wanted,” she admitted. “So I still have the energy to fight hard and want to make a bigger breakthrough in the singles events.”
Wang is focused on refining her skills. “Although the preparation cycle for the Paralympics is very long, I constantly make adjustments,” she explained. “During practice, I have been strengthening my basic skills, technique, and tactics. After playing for so many years, I have a growing desire to stand on the podium.”
Inspiration for a New Generation
The stories of Zhang Bian and Wang Rui illustrate the transformative power of sport and the resilience of the human spirit. Their journeys from adversity to athletic excellence resonate with audiences worldwide, offering inspiration to both aspiring athletes and those facing personal challenges.
As the 2024 Paris Summer Paralympics draw near, the world will be watching as Zhang and Wang strive for glory once more. Their determination embodies the relentless pursuit of excellence that defines the Paralympic spirit.
