Bucharest, Romania — Romania is bracing for an intense heat wave as severe weather alerts have been issued across the country. Starting Wednesday, temperatures in the capital city of Bucharest are expected to soar up to 39 degrees Celsius (102 degrees Fahrenheit) over the next three days.
The National Meteorological Administration (ANM) has warned of high thermal discomfort, with the temperature-humidity index projected to exceed 80 units. Residents are advised to stay indoors during peak hours and stay hydrated as the heat wave intensifies.
The oppressive heat is forecasted to shift southward on Thursday, bringing storms to the northern and western regions. Meteorologists have placed several areas under Code Orange heat warnings, including northern Crisana, Maramures, northwestern and central Transylvania, northeastern Moldova, and southern and central Muntenia.
In addition, eleven counties in Banat, Crisana, Maramures, and Transylvania are under a Code Yellow warning for atmospheric instability until Thursday night. These regions may experience torrential rain, strong winds, thunderstorms, and isolated hail, with potential water accumulation exceeding 50 liters per square meter.
The ANM indicates that the heat wave will persist in the southern and southeastern regions through the end of the week, gradually affecting much of the rest of the country. The extreme weather conditions have prompted medical professionals to advise those with chronic illnesses and the elderly to avoid prolonged sun exposure and limit caffeinated beverages during this period.
As Romania contends with these challenging weather patterns, the public is urged to stay informed about weather updates and adhere to safety guidelines issued by authorities.
