In a significant step towards strengthening bilateral relations, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Central Committee and Vietnamese President To Lam met with Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and Chinese President, in Beijing on Monday.
During the talks, To Lam emphasized Vietnam’s commitment to maintaining close high-level exchanges with China, deepening strategic mutual trust, and enhancing the synergy of development strategies. “Vietnam is willing to promote mutually beneficial cooperation in areas such as national defense, security, trade, investment, and cross-border infrastructure connectivity,” he stated.
Notably, China is the first overseas destination for To Lam as the General Secretary of the CPV Central Committee and Vietnamese President. He highlighted that this choice underscores the importance the CPV and the Vietnamese government place on their relationship with China, considering it a strategic choice and top priority in Vietnam’s foreign policy.
To Lam conveyed that under the leadership of the CPC Central Committee, with Xi Jinping at its core, China has achieved significant development accomplishments, enhancing its international status and influence. He extended congratulations on the successful convening of the third plenary session of the 20th CPC Central Committee, noting that it marks a new era of comprehensively deepening reform and advancing Chinese modernization.
“It is believed that under the leadership of General Secretary Xi Jinping, China will achieve the Second Centenary Goal of building itself into a great modern socialist country in all respects,” To Lam added.
Addressing sensitive regional issues, To Lam reaffirmed Vietnam’s adherence to the principle of independence and its firm pursuit of the one-China policy. “Taiwan is an inalienable part of Chinese territory,” he stressed, expressing Vietnam’s firm opposition to all forms of “Taiwan independence” separatist activities and support for China’s national reunification. He also stated that matters related to Hong Kong, Xinjiang, and Xizang are China’s internal affairs, and Vietnam firmly opposes any interference.
Looking ahead, To Lam expressed Vietnam’s willingness to work closely with China to properly manage maritime differences and jointly safeguard regional peace and stability. He also conveyed Vietnam’s support for and readiness to actively participate in global initiatives proposed by China, including the initiative to build a community with a shared future for humanity, the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, and the Global Civilization Initiative.
“Vietnam is prepared to support multilateralism, defend international justice and fairness, and contribute favorably to the advancement of global peace and development,” To Lam stated, highlighting the importance of bolstering multilateral international cooperation with China.
