The ninth Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) Foreign Ministers' Meeting concluded on Friday with a joint communique pledging deeper practical cooperation among the six member countries: China, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam.
In a spirit of good-neighborly friendship, the ministers committed to enhancing mutual trust, expanding common interests, and jointly building a community with a shared future toward peace and prosperity.
The communique emphasized advancing the LMC based on the principles of extensive consultation, joint contribution, and shared benefits. The nations stressed the importance of strengthening the battle against cross-border crimes, including terrorism, drug trafficking, human trafficking, money laundering, and terrorist financing. To this end, they agreed to hold a ministerial meeting on law enforcement and non-traditional security cooperation at an early date.
Recognizing the need for improved disaster prevention and emergency response capabilities, the countries agreed to enhance cooperation in earthquake disaster reduction and ensure regional infrastructure connectivity. This includes responding more effectively to earthquakes, mudslides, typhoons, floods, and other natural disasters.
The ministers vowed to deepen cooperation across various fields to promote green, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth. They emphasized accelerating the implementation of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The communique highlighted the agreement to promote high-quality implementation of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) agreement. The nations aim to enhance the level of liberalization and facilitation for regional trade and investment while reducing non-tariff barriers.
On technological advancement, the countries emphasized strengthening exchanges and cooperation in artificial intelligence (AI), information security, and governance. They pledged to enhance scientific and technological cooperation and capacity building in AI to empower inclusive and sustainable development.
Reaffirming the important role of tourism in fostering people-to-people bonds, the nations vowed to strengthen cooperation in tourism and civil aviation. They also encouraged more social, cultural, and youth activities to enhance mutual understanding and friendship among their peoples.
The joint communique reflects the shared commitment of the Lancang-Mekong nations to work collaboratively for the betterment of the region, demonstrating a unified approach to common challenges and opportunities.
