Chinese Enterprises Employ AI to Combat Cyber Threats: Qi-Anxin’s QAX-GPT Leads the Way

As cyberattacks become more sophisticated with the advent of artificial intelligence, Chinese enterprises are turning to AI to strengthen their cybersecurity defenses. Embracing the adage, “Apply the same tactics to the person who used them on you,” companies like Qi-Anxin Group are harnessing generative AI technologies to counter cyber threats.

In March, Qi-Anxin Group, a leading cybersecurity company in the Chinese mainland, unveiled its large-scale AI model, QAX-GPT. The company anticipates that QAX-GPT will enhance the development of security products, improve detection of threats and vulnerabilities, and advance the analysis of internet-related crimes.

“Our model possesses investigation and judgment capabilities comparable to an intermediate-level security expert,” said Qi Xiangdong, chairman of Qi-Anxin. “Its efficiency in alarm processing and judgments exceeds manual efforts by more than 60 times.”

Since OpenAI’s ChatGPT made waves globally in late 2022, tech giants and startups worldwide have been racing to launch similar AI chatbots and industry-specific applications based on large language models. However, while generative AI tools have lowered the barrier for cybercriminals with limited technical skills, they also offer powerful tools for cybersecurity defense.

“Challenges facing cybersecurity include a scarcity of experts, human alarm fatigue, and efficiency bottlenecks,” said Zhang Zhuo, vice president of Qi-Anxin. “QAX-GPT enables us to transition from reproducing goods to reproducing expert experience.”

The lack of network security personnel and resources often leads to critical alarms being neglected or mishandled, posing significant vulnerabilities. According to a survey by Qi-Anxin, 99% of alarms suggesting cybersecurity threats require expert analysis, but the limited number of experts cannot keep pace with the overwhelming number of alerts. AI-powered comprehensive analysis systems like QAX-GPT can greatly bolster security defenses.

“QAX-GPT learns much faster than a human expert, gaining expertise from vast corpora of analyses, reports, and articles related to cybersecurity,” Zhang added.

China has been a major victim of hacking and cyberattacks. In 2020 alone, over 42 million malware attacks were detected in China, according to a report released by the National Computer Network Emergency Response Technical Team and Coordination Center of China.

As the battle between cyber attackers and defenders intensifies, the deployment of AI models like QAX-GPT represents a significant step forward in safeguarding digital infrastructure. By leveraging AI, Chinese enterprises are not only strengthening their own defenses but are also contributing to global cybersecurity efforts.
