China has called on nations to ensure their defense cooperation does not target any third party or undermine regional peace and stability. The appeal was made by Zhang Xiaogang, spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of National Defense, during a press briefing on Friday.
“Defense collaborations between countries should foster peace and not be directed against others,” Zhang emphasized. He criticized certain countries, mentioning the United States and Japan, for “stirring up troubles and muddying the waters” in the South China Sea.
Addressing recent developments, Zhang commented on the U.S. announcement of a $500 million military aid package to the Philippines, purportedly to assist in responding to the China Coast Guard and so-called “maritime militia.” He also referenced joint military exercises between Japan and the Philippines in the latter’s exclusive economic zone, initiatives claimed to support a “free and open Indo-Pacific.”
“The Philippines is inviting wolves into the house and willingly acting as their pawns, which is despised by other regional countries,” Zhang stated, expressing concern over these alliances.
Zhang reiterated China’s stance on territorial sovereignty, stating, “It needs to be emphasized that China has indisputable sovereignty over Nanhai Zhudao and its adjacent waters.” He affirmed that China would “take legitimate countermeasures against deliberate infringements and provocations to protect our territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests.”
The spokesperson’s remarks reflect ongoing tensions in the South China Sea, a region critical for international trade and rich in resources. China’s assertions over Nanhai Zhudao and surrounding waters have been a point of contention with neighboring countries and external powers involved in the area.
Zhang urged all parties to act responsibly and contribute to regional stability. “We hope relevant countries will work with China to maintain peace and tranquility in the South China Sea,” he concluded.
