China’s Xizang Region Launches Innovative Dairy Cow Research Model

A groundbreaking initiative in dairy farming was unveiled in China’s Xizang Autonomous Region on Thursday, marking a significant advancement for the plateau’s dairy industry. The region introduced a Science and Technology Backyard (STB) focusing on dairy cows, aiming to revolutionize dairy production through innovative research and technology.

Since 2023, China Agricultural University has been conducting scientific assessments of cows and dairy farms at a farming center and a pasture in Lhasa, the regional capital. The goal is to optimize feeding management practices to maximize the production potential of dairy cows in the challenging plateau environment.

“Xizang’s high altitude and harsh climate present unique challenges for dairy farming. Dairy cows here have a high incidence of cerebral edema and pulmonary edema, which adversely affect their production performance,” explained Fang Qianhai of China Agricultural University.

To address these issues, the research team has developed an early warning system for altitude sickness in cows and innovatively designed a portable wearable oxygen mask specifically for them. “These innovations are crucial for improving the health and productivity of dairy cows in high-altitude regions,” Fang added.

The STB, officially approved by the Ministry of Education at the end of 2023, serves as a science and technology service platform established directly on the front lines of production, such as rural areas and enterprises. It integrates agricultural science and technology innovation, demonstration and promotion, and talent training.

The establishment of the STB in Xizang represents an important step in advancing agricultural practices in high-altitude regions. By bringing cutting-edge research directly to local farmers and enterprises, the initiative aims to enhance productivity and sustainability in the region’s dairy industry.
