China Warns Japan: Taiwan is a Red Line Not to Be Crossed

Beijing, October 25—In a stern message to Tokyo, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian declared on Wednesday that the Taiwan question is a non-negotiable red line for China and a core issue in China-Japan relations.

Speaking at a press conference, Lin emphasized, “There is only one China, and Taiwan is an inseparable part of China’s territory.” He further stated that the Taiwan question touches upon the political foundation of China-Japan relations and urged Japan to exercise caution.

“China firmly opposes any form of official interaction between countries with which China has diplomatic relations and Taiwan,” Lin remarked, noting that China has lodged a formal protest with Japan over recent developments.

Highlighting historical context, Lin reminded that Japan ruled Taiwan as a colony for half a century, “committing countless crimes and bearing serious historical responsibilities toward the Chinese people.” He urged certain Japanese politicians to “remember the lessons of history” and to recognize the established fact of one China.

Lin called on Japan to adhere to the one-China principle and the spirit of the four political documents between China and Japan, cautioning against sending “wrong signals” to separatist forces advocating for “Taiwan independence.”

Addressing the actions of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities in Taiwan, Lin stated that their efforts to seek independence by colluding with external forces are “doomed to fail.” He reaffirmed China’s stance against any separatist movements.

China and Japan have a complex relationship shaped by history and regional dynamics. Lin’s comments underscore China’s sensitivities regarding Taiwan and signal a firm message to Japan to respect China’s core interests.
