China has surpassed other nations in its efforts to combat climate change by achieving the world’s highest annual carbon-sink capacity in its forests and grasslands. According to Guo Qingjun, an official from the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, China’s forests and grasslands absorb over 1.2 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents each year.
Guo made this announcement at a press conference on ecological conservation and restoration held on Wednesday, the day before China’s first National Ecology Day. Last year, China’s top legislature designated August 15 as National Ecology Day to raise public awareness and encourage actions to protect the ecological environment.
Carbon sinks, such as forests and grasslands, play a crucial role in mitigating climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. China’s immense carbon-sink capacity underscores the country’s efforts in ecological conservation and environmental protection.
