China’s courier sector has reached an unprecedented milestone in 2024, delivering over 100 billion parcels on Tuesday, according to the State Post Bureau (SPB). This achievement comes 71 days earlier than in 2023, signaling a rapidly expanding consumer market and highlighting the nation’s economic vitality.
On average, this remarkable volume equates to 71.43 packages per person across China, or an astonishing 5,144 packages delivered every second, as reported by the SPB. The express delivery industry has solidified its role as a key indicator of China’s economic health, setting new records across several metrics amidst a steady economic recovery.
An Era of Record-Breaking Growth
The sector’s highest single-day delivery volume soared past 580 million parcels, while the average monthly volume surpassed 13 billion parcels. Additionally, the industry witnessed its monthly revenue exceed 100 billion yuan (approximately $14 billion) for the first time, underscoring the robust demand and efficiency of China’s logistics network.
Reaching Every Corner of the Nation
China boasts a highly efficient logistics network that extends to even the most remote areas. With 234,000 delivery points nationwide and express delivery services covering over 95 percent of villages, goods can reach consumers faster than ever before. This summer, the system enabled next-day delivery of seasonal fruits from distant regions, enhancing the livelihood of rural communities and satisfying urban demand.
Innovation Driving Efficiency
Technological advancements have played a crucial role in boosting delivery efficiency. In several cities, drones are capable of delivering packages in about 10 minutes, while autonomous delivery vehicles have significantly reduced delivery times and operational costs. These innovations not only improve customer experience but also contribute to sustainable practices within the logistics industry.
Future Outlook
Looking ahead, the SPB plans to further enhance logistics hubs in urban clusters, improve rural logistics systems, and expand international delivery services. Efforts will also focus on integrating the delivery chain with advanced manufacturing, aligning with China’s broader goals of technological modernization and global trade expansion.
For the tenth consecutive year, China has led the world in express delivery volume, a testament to its dynamic economy and the pivotal role of the courier sector in supporting commerce and daily life.
