Chinese Breaker Liu Qingyi Inspires Young B-Girls to Dream Big After Olympic Bronze

Chinese breaker Liu Qingyi, popularly known as “B-Girl 671,” made history at the 2024 Paris Summer Games by securing a bronze medal in breaking’s Olympic debut. At just 18 years old, Liu showcased her exceptional talent as the sport entered the world’s premier multisport competition for the first time.

In an exclusive interview with CGTN Sports Scene’s Greg Laffradi, Liu shared an inspiring message for young breakdancers aspiring to follow in her footsteps: “Trust yourself, trust the process. You should be yourself first. Then you can overcome so many problems. You should trust yourself and do as you want and as you dream.”

Liu’s journey to the podium was marked by intense competition. She faced Dominika Banevic of Lithuania in the semifinals but fell short of advancing to the final. Determined not to leave empty-handed, she confronted India Sardjoe of the Netherlands in the bronze medal match. Drawing from past experiences, including a previous loss to Sardjoe at the Red Bull BC One Final 2022, Liu delivered a dynamic performance with new moves to clinch victory.

“After the semifinal, I knew I couldn’t go to the final. So the next battle was the most important. I should win. I had a feeling that I must win,” Liu recalled. “In Paris, I wanted revenge, and I got it in the end.”

Reflecting on her Olympic experience, Liu expressed gratitude for the opportunity to compete at such a high level. “Step by step, I think it’s only a process of my life,” she said. “The Olympics is a milestone in breaking and for myself. So I’m happy I can compete in so many high-quality competitions, and I grew up.”

Liu’s remarkable achievement not only brings pride to the Chinese breaking community but also serves as an inspiration to aspiring B-Girls worldwide. Her message emphasizes the importance of self-belief and perseverance in the pursuit of dreams.
