Libyan Prime Minister Abdul-Hamid Dbeibah has declared his government’s firm stance against any attempts to reignite military violations and deepen divisions within the country. Speaking at a graduation ceremony for military college students in the capital city of Tripoli on Sunday, Dbeibah emphasized the importance of national unity and the building of a strong, unified army.
“We affirm that the unity of Libya is a red line,” Dbeibah stated in his address. “We are continuing to build a strong army with a belief based on God and the nation, not on individuals or entities.” He urged the newly graduated military personnel to “follow the footsteps of the army’s founding fathers to deter external ambitions as well as personal ambitions that seek the return of tyranny.”
Libya has faced a prolonged period of political instability since the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. The nation remains divided, with two rival governments and various foreign entities influencing its internal affairs. The fragile peace was recently disrupted when deadly clashes erupted on Friday in eastern Tripoli between rival militias. The confrontations resulted in at least nine fatalities, sixteen injuries, and forced dozens of families to flee their homes, according to local officials.
The United Nations Support Mission in Libya condemned the recent violence, highlighting the urgent need to unify the country’s military and security institutions. The mission stressed the importance of establishing legitimate and accountable bodies to prevent further unrest.
Dbeibah’s commitment to oppose military violations comes at a critical time for Libya as it seeks to navigate the path toward stability. His emphasis on unity and national identity aims to rally support within the armed forces and among the populace to resist divisions and external influences.
