China’s Deep Sea No. 1 Embarks on 45-Day Western Pacific Expedition

China’s research vessel Shenhai Yihao, known as Deep Sea No. 1, set sail from Qingdao in east China’s Shandong Province on Sunday, marking the commencement of the 2024 Western Pacific International Voyage. The vessel embarks on a 45-day scientific mission in the Western Pacific Ocean, carrying the country’s manned submersible Jiaolong.

The expedition aims to deepen understanding of the unique ecosystems and environments of seamounts. Jiaolong is scheduled to perform 18 dives to collect deep-sea organisms, seawater, and sediments. These samples will contribute to research on biodiversity and geological structures in the depths of the ocean.

At the launch ceremony, Tang Dongmei, a senior official from the Ministry of Natural Resources, highlighted the international collaboration involved in the voyage. She announced that the China-led Digital Deep-sea Typical Habitats Program has garnered support and participation from 39 countries. “This expedition represents the first international voyage under the program,” Tang stated, emphasizing the significance of global cooperation in deep-sea exploration.

The mission includes scientists from Canada, Spain, Colombia, and other countries and regions, reflecting a collective effort to advance marine science. The diverse team will work together to gather data and share expertise, fostering international scientific collaboration.

The departure of Shenhai Yihao signifies a milestone in China’s commitment to oceanic research and underscores the importance of understanding deep-sea environments. The findings from this mission are expected to enhance knowledge of marine ecosystems and contribute to the sustainable development of ocean resources.
