The 2024 Paris Summer Olympics witnessed Chinese athletes making historic strides in newly introduced and returning disciplines. With the debut of breaking and the return of sports like speed climbing, BMX freestyle, and skateboarding—first seen at the Tokyo Games in 2021—China showcased its rising talent on the global stage.
In a remarkable performance on July 31, 18-year-old Deng Yawen secured China's first-ever Olympic gold medal in BMX freestyle during the women's park final.
"What I feel is pride," Deng expressed after her victory. "To be able to win this gold medal for China, and also make a little contribution to the sport."
She reflected on the challenges faced along the way: "When facing difficulties and challenges and overcoming them, we can harvest the joy of success. As for why we are willing to keep training every day, I think every rider wants to win an Olympic medal for China."
Deng also encouraged others to embrace the sport: "I want to tell you that BMX is not a scary sport. If you can accept and enjoy it, I believe it can bring you a different kind of fun."
China's achievements in these new Olympic events highlight the nation's expanding reach in diverse sporting arenas. As these sports continue to grow in popularity, more talented athletes like Deng are emerging, inspiring a new generation of enthusiasts both at home and abroad.
