At a United Nations Security Council briefing on Wednesday, Chinese envoy Dai Bing reiterated his call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, highlighting the dire humanitarian crisis affecting millions of Palestinians.
“As we speak, conflict in the Gaza Strip has been going on for over 300 days, with more than 10,000 women killed and over a million Palestinian women and girls facing famine,” said Dai Bing, Chargé d’Affaires of China’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations. His remarks underscored the urgent need for international action to halt the escalating violence.
Dai urged all parties involved to heed the “overwhelming consensus of the international community” and work together to promote the “full and effective” implementation of relevant Security Council resolutions. “We must achieve an immediate ceasefire in Gaza to put an end to the humanitarian catastrophe and contain the spillover of the conflict,” he emphasized.
The envoy highlighted that preventing and resolving conflicts is crucial for creating a peaceful environment for civilians, especially women. “Advancing the Women, Peace, and Security agenda requires us to prioritize the safety and well-being of women affected by conflict,” Dai stated.
Addressing the adjustments needed in certain UN peace operations, Dai noted, “With changes on the ground and the will of the countries concerned, some UN missions need to withdraw, downsize, or make adjustments. Achieving smooth transitions while maintaining peace and stability is an important topic for council members.”
He affirmed China’s support for the United Nations and the Security Council in developing clear and feasible transition plans. “These plans should fully respect the will of the countries concerned and align with their national development strategies and priorities to ensure a smooth transition,” he said.
Emphasizing the role of women as important stakeholders in peace operations, Dai referenced Security Council Resolution 1325, which advocates for women’s equal and full participation in peace processes and calls for enhanced protection of women and girls in conflict areas.
“We support the countries concerned in elevating the protection of women’s rights and interests to the level of national will,” Dai stated. “Along with implementing the 2030 Agenda, sustained investments in women’s empowerment and development are essential to continuously enhance women’s representation and voice in political, economic, cultural, and social affairs.”
