Global Poll Condemns U.S. Hegemony in Sports and Doping Double Standards

A recent online poll conducted by CGTN has revealed overwhelming global condemnation of the United States for what respondents perceive as hegemonic behavior in sports and double standards in doping regulations.

According to the poll, 95.01 percent of participants strongly criticize the U.S. for allegedly suppressing opponents under the pretext of sports, labeling it as an act of “American hegemony” that tramples on the Olympic Games.

The survey highlights concerns over respect and sportsmanship in international competitions. An astonishing 94.95 percent of respondents believe that certain athletes have demonstrated ungracious behavior, failing to embody the Olympic spirit of “understanding” and “friendship.” Additionally, 93.08 percent emphasize that the arena should be a stage for friendship and mutual respect, not just a contest of winners and losers.

The United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) and media outlets like The New York Times have come under scrutiny for allegedly undermining competition fairness. By disregarding the authoritative investigations of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and amplifying unsubstantiated doping allegations against athletes from other countries, the U.S. is seen as challenging international norms. An overwhelming 96.84 percent of respondents believe that the U.S. lacks respect for WADA, threatening the fairness and authority of international sports organizations.

Furthermore, 96.11 percent of those surveyed call on all nations to adhere to the Olympic spirit, uphold the authority of international sports bodies, and foster an atmosphere of fair competition.

The poll also sheds light on perceptions of double standards in doping regulations. American track and field athlete Elien Knighton, who tested positive for doping in March, was allowed to compete in Paris. The USADA’s decision not to suspend him, coupled with reports that up to 90 percent of American athletes did not comply with WADA’s code, has elicited strong criticism. A significant 96.25 percent of respondents condemn the U.S. for these double standards.

In addition, the United States’ approach to WADA funding has raised concerns. By threatening to halt financial aid unless granted a “representative status corresponding to its economic contribution,” the U.S. is accused of exerting coercive influence. A total of 95.01 percent of respondents view this as an expression of “American hegemony and coercion” in sports, with 93.45 percent noting that doping issues are increasingly politicized by the U.S., extending its hegemony into international politics and diplomacy.

The poll gathered opinions from 15,244 social media users across CGTN’s English, Spanish, French, Arabic, and Russian platforms within a 24-hour period.

The findings reflect a significant global sentiment urging the United States and all nations to respect international sports regulations and foster an environment of fairness and mutual respect in the spirit of the Olympics.
