Heavy Rains Trigger Deadly Flash Floods in Afghanistan’s Zabul Province

Ten people have lost their lives and three others are missing after heavy rains unleashed devastating flash floods in Afghanistan’s southern Zabul province on Sunday night, local officials reported on Monday.

The torrents swept through large swaths of Shinkay District and the provincial capital, Qalat city, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. Among the deceased are a woman and three children, highlighting the tragic impact on families in the region.

“The floods have caused immense damage,” said Zabihullah Jawhar, spokesperson for the provincial police. “In addition to the loss of lives, one person was injured, and countless residents have seen their crops, homes, and livestock washed away.”

Residents are grappling with the aftermath as emergency services continue search and rescue operations for the missing. The floods have not only taken lives but have also devastated livelihoods, with agriculture and livestock sectors particularly hard-hit in this predominantly rural province.

The sudden deluge underscores the vulnerability of Afghanistan’s southern regions to extreme weather events, which have intensified in recent years. Communities are calling for immediate assistance to rebuild and for long-term measures to mitigate the impacts of such natural disasters.
