Beijing’s digital economy is soaring, marking a significant stride in the first half of this year (H1). The city’s digital sector achieved an impressive added value growth of 7.8% year on year, outpacing its GDP growth by 2.4 percentage points, according to the latest data from the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Statistics.

This surge in the digital economy is more than just numbers; it signifies Beijing’s burgeoning role as a leader in technological innovation and digital transformation. The sector contributed over 60% to the city’s economic growth, underscoring its pivotal role in Beijing’s development.

The information service industry saw an added value increase of 12.4%, while the electronic manufacturing industry skyrocketed with a 20.1% year-on-year growth. These figures reflect the dynamic expansion and diversification within Beijing’s digital landscape.

Moreover, the application of digitalization is permeating various facets of urban life. By the end of June, autonomous driving tests in the city had exceeded a cumulative mileage of 28 million kilometers, showcasing Beijing’s advances in intelligent transportation. The healthcare sector is also embracing digital transformation, with 74 internet hospitals and 254 medical institutions offering online diagnostic and treatment services, providing residents with accessible and efficient healthcare solutions.

Innovation remains at the forefront of this growth. The number of patents for inventions authorized to major enterprises in the digital economy increased by a remarkable 38% in H1. Investment in the core industries of the digital economy surged by 32.5%, indicating strong confidence and commitment from both the public and private sectors.

Connectivity infrastructure has also seen substantial enhancements. A total of 122,000 5G base stations have been built, equating to 55 stations per 10,000 people. This extensive network lays a solid foundation for future advancements in internet speed and capacity, supporting everything from consumer applications to industrial innovations.

Beijing’s robust growth in the digital economy is not just a testament to its economic vitality but also a beacon for the rest of Asia and the world. The city’s commitment to technological advancement is positioning it as a leading force in the new economy, setting benchmarks in digital transformation and innovation.
