China has officially commenced an observational experiment on land-atmosphere interactions in the Mount Qomolangma region of southwest China’s Xizang Autonomous Region, the Aerospace Information Research Institute under the Chinese Academy of Sciences announced on Friday.
The experiment aims to deepen the understanding of how land surfaces interact with the atmosphere in this unique and ecologically significant area. Mount Qomolangma, known globally as Mount Everest, is the highest peak in the world and is located in the Himalayas on the border between China and Nepal.
“The interaction between the land surface and the atmosphere is a crucial component of ecological and climate systems,” said Jia Li, a researcher at the institute. “In the Mount Qomolangma region, land-atmosphere interactions not only affect the climate of the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau and its surrounding areas but also have the potential to influence the global climate through complex climate feedback mechanisms and atmospheric circulation,” Jia added.
Understanding these interactions is vital for predicting climate patterns, assessing ecological changes, and formulating strategies to combat climate change. The Qinghai-Xizang Plateau, also known as the Tibetan Plateau, is often referred to as the “Third Pole” due to its significant impact on global weather and climate systems.
The experiment will involve comprehensive observations and data collection on land surface processes, atmospheric conditions, and their interactions. The insights gained are expected to contribute to global climate research and provide valuable information for policymakers and scientists worldwide.
