The legacy of Venetian merchant and explorer Marco Polo comes alive in Beijing as an exhibition titled “A Journey of Knowledge – ‘The Travels of Marco Polo’ and its Legacy between East and West” opened to the public at the China Millennium Monument Art Museum on July 26. Marking the 700th anniversary of Marco Polo’s passing, this event stands as a cultural bridge connecting the East and West.
The exhibition also commemorates the 20th anniversary of the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Italy. Showcasing 135 artifacts from 13 Italian cultural institutions and two from China, the exhibition offers a vivid portrayal of the historical exchanges between the two civilizations.
Notable participating institutions include Italy’s Treccani Encyclopedia Institute and China’s Jingdezhen Imperial Kiln Museum. Visitors can immerse themselves in a diverse collection that features medieval parchments, exquisite oil paintings, intricate sculptures, vibrant textiles, and historical weapons, each piece narrating a story of cross-cultural interaction.
“This exhibition is a testament to the enduring ties between China and Italy,” said a spokesperson from the museum. “Through Marco Polo’s journey, we explore the rich tapestry of cultural exchange that has shaped our history and continues to influence our present.”
The artifacts will be on display in Beijing until November 24, offering ample opportunity for visitors to delve into the legacy of Marco Polo. Following their stay in the capital, the collection will travel to other museums across China, continuing its mission of fostering cultural understanding and appreciation.
For scholars, history enthusiasts, and cultural explorers, this exhibition provides a unique window into the past and a reflection on the ongoing dialogue between East and West. It serves not only as a celebration of a historic journey but also as an invitation to embark on new explorations of knowledge and friendship.
