Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi Meets Philippine Counterpart to Address Bilateral Challenges

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with his Philippine counterpart Enrique Manalo in Vientiane on Friday, aiming to address significant challenges in China-Philippines relations amid escalating tensions.

Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, emphasized the importance of good-neighborliness, mutual benefit, and common development between the two neighboring countries. He stated that these principles align with the fundamental interests of both nations.

Reflecting on recent years, Wang noted that while maintaining a good relationship between China and the Philippines is vital, it can be easily disrupted. He attributed current tensions to repeated violations by the Philippines of bilateral consensus and its own commitments, ongoing maritime infringements, and amplified media hype.

Wang expressed China’s deep concern and firm opposition to these actions. He specifically cautioned against the introduction of the U.S. intermediate-range missile system by the Philippines, warning that such a move would escalate regional tensions, trigger an arms race, and contradict the interests and wishes of the Philippine people.
