Xi Jinping Chairs Meeting on Flood Control and Disaster Relief Amid Peak Flood Season

Chinese President Xi Jinping, who is also the general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, chaired a meeting on Thursday with the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee to discuss and arrange critical work related to flood control and disaster relief.

China has entered a pivotal period of flood control as significant flooding is anticipated in major river basins, including the Yangtze River and the Yellow River. The arrival of typhoons further intensifies the flood control situation, making it more severe and complex.

The peak flood season in China spans from late July to early August. During this time, heavy rainfall and typhoons elevate water levels, posing significant threats to communities along rivers, near lakes, and along coastlines.

Forecasts indicate that all seven major river basins in China could experience flooding during this period. Additionally, typhoons are likely to move inland, bringing an increased frequency of intense and extreme weather events, which could have devastating consequences.

On Wednesday, China’s National Meteorological Center issued a red alert, the highest level, for Typhoon Gaemi—the first red alert for a typhoon this year.

During the meeting, authorities at all levels were urged to remain highly vigilant and proactive in flood control efforts to win the tough battle against floods. Emphasizing the principle of always putting people’s lives and safety first, the meeting called for making every effort to minimize casualties by promptly relocating those in danger.

The meeting highlighted the need to reinforce water infrastructure nationwide to prevent dike breaches and dam bursts in major rivers and reservoirs. It stressed that disaster relief funds should be allocated promptly, and appropriate arrangements should be made to care for affected residents, ensuring their needs for medical services and education are met. Efforts should also be made to help them resume production and rebuild their homes.

Additionally, the meeting called for solid work in disaster control within the agricultural sector to minimize losses and ensure China’s food security.
