Tesla CEO Elon Musk has announced plans to introduce humanoid robots for internal use starting in 2025, with broader production slated for 2026.
In a recent social media update, Musk shared that the robots, dubbed Optimus, will begin performing factory tasks later this year and could be commercially available by late 2025.
The development of humanoid robots represents a significant shift in Tesla’s focus toward artificial intelligence and automation. Major companies like Honda and Hyundai’s Boston Dynamics have been working on similar technologies to address labor shortages and manage repetitive or hazardous tasks in industries such as logistics and manufacturing.
Tesla unveiled the first generation of its Optimus robot, named Bumblebee, in September 2022. This year, the company released a video showcasing a second-generation bipedal robot folding a T-shirt at their facility, demonstrating advancements in dexterity and coordination.
Musk’s announcement comes amid a decrease in demand for Tesla’s electric vehicles (EVs), which currently account for over 80 percent of the company’s quarterly revenue. In response, Tesla is shifting its focus toward artificial intelligence, autonomous driving software, robotaxis, and the Optimus robot.
Previously, Musk had projected that Tesla would have “robotaxi” autonomous cars by 2020. However, the robotaxi project has faced delays, with Musk announcing last week that a significant design change has pushed back its launch.
