Located on the easternmost coast of Shanghai’s Chongming Island, the world’s largest alluvial estuary island, the Dongtan Wetland is a true paradise for migratory birds. Positioned along one of the world’s eight major migratory routes, it serves as a crucial stopover and habitat for these avian travelers. Each year, nearly one million migratory birds arrive here, either for temporary respite or to spend the winter months.
To date, over 300 bird species have been recorded at the wetland, including 20 that are listed as endangered. Recognizing the ecological significance of this natural treasure, a nature reserve was established at the wetland in 1999. In 2005, it was officially designated as the Shanghai Chongming Dongtan National Nature Reserve, solidifying its status as a protected area under national conservation efforts.
The Dongtan Wetland not only plays a vital role in supporting bird biodiversity but also contributes to the environmental health of the region. Its preservation ensures the continuation of migratory patterns that are essential for global ecological balance. As conservation efforts continue, the wetland stands as a testament to China’s commitment to protecting its natural heritage for future generations.
