Over the past three decades, unwavering national support has catalyzed remarkable transformations in the Xizang Autonomous Region. Since the pivotal Third Forum on Work of Xizang in 1994, which established the strategy of “taking responsibility for each region, providing counterpart support, and regularly rotating,” the cumulative efforts have yielded substantial progress.
The nation has intensified its assistance to Xizang, with state organs, various provinces and cities, and central state-owned enterprises playing crucial roles. From 2012 to 2022, a total of 8,153 cadres and talents were dispatched to Xizang, 6,302 assistance projects were implemented, and an investment of 53.6 billion yuan ($7.37 billion) was made. These contributions have significantly advanced the region’s economic growth, social development, education, healthcare, and infrastructure.
Industrial assistance has been particularly instrumental in fostering unique local industries. By leveraging the strengths of both the assisting regions and Xizang, numerous industrial projects have propelled high-quality development. The construction of industrial parks has served as a platform, attracting investment and boosting the internal drive of local communities.
In Gyantse County, situated over 4,000 meters above sea level, the Red River Valley Modern Agricultural Science and Technology Demonstration Park, supported by Shanghai’s technology and expertise, has revolutionized traditional agriculture. This initiative has benefited 19 towns and 28 vegetable planting sites, enhancing agricultural productivity and sustainability.
Similarly, with assistance from Jiangsu Province, the Gesangtang Modern Agriculture and Animal Husbandry Industry Demonstration Park—the first comprehensive full-industry-chain agriculture and animal husbandry demonstration park in Xizang—has been established. To improve the quality of local yak breeds, superior yak varieties were selected from across the country. The Suzhou assistance team also established a yak industry research and service center in Lhunzhub County of Lhasa. By adopting a development model encompassing the entire industry chain—from scientific breeding to comprehensive utilization—the traditional “boat of the plateau” has become a valuable asset, contributing to the prosperity of farmers and herdsmen.
Moreover, initiatives aimed at enhancing the livelihoods of Xizang residents have markedly improved their well-being in crucial areas such as healthcare, education, and employment. Continuous efforts in these sectors have elevated living standards and brought tangible benefits to the local population.
The road of supporting Xizang is a journey without end. The collective commitment to the region’s development continues to drive progress, ensuring that the momentum built over the past decades will carry forward into a prosperous future for Xizang.
