In 1994, the Third Forum on Work of Xizang introduced a strategic initiative that has since transformed the region’s economic and social landscape. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the “nationwide support for Xizang” program, a collaborative effort that has united provinces, municipalities, and enterprises across the country in providing sustained assistance to Xizang.
Due to factors such as challenging natural conditions and a historically weak foundation for development, Xizang faced significant obstacles after its peaceful liberation in 1951. Recognizing these challenges, the central authorities established principles and policies aimed at bolstering Xizang’s growth and integration with the national economy.
Over the past three decades, ten batches comprising 11,900 dedicated cadres and talents have journeyed to various parts of the plateau to support Xizang’s development. This concerted effort has involved exploring new models of coordinated development, industrial cooperation, and management of aid.
The impact of this counterpart assistance is evident in the region’s rapid economic growth. From 2012 to 2022, the central government provided subsidies totaling 1.73 trillion yuan ($238 billion). With this financial support, investment in fixed assets increased by 2.3 times, fueling infrastructure projects that have significantly improved the livelihoods of local residents.
Major projects orchestrated by the central authorities have not only enhanced the standard of living but also attracted 465 billion yuan in private investment, boosting the vitality of the region’s economy. The strengthening of financial institutions in Xizang has led to a multi-level, diversified, and multi-functional financial system, including banking, securities, and insurance sectors.
As Xizang continues to develop, the ongoing support from across the nation underscores a commitment to inclusive growth and shared prosperity. The 30th anniversary of this initiative serves as a testament to the power of coordinated efforts and the enduring bonds that unite the region with the rest of the country.
