Expert Urges Greater Use of AI in Cultural Heritage Conservation at Beijing Symposium

At the International Symposium on Cultural Heritage Conservation by Digitization in Beijing, experts from around the world gathered to discuss the future of preserving cultural heritage in the digital age. Among them was Mario Santana Quintero, the honorary president of the International Committee for Documentation of Cultural Heritage (CIPA).

In an exclusive interview with CGTN, Quintero emphasized the pivotal role that artificial intelligence (AI) can play in the digitized conservation of cultural heritage. “AI has the potential to revolutionize how we document, analyze, and preserve our cultural treasures,” he stated. “By embracing AI technologies, we can ensure that future generations have access to the rich history and diversity of our shared human experience.”

Quintero called for broader application of AI techniques in the field, highlighting how machine learning algorithms can assist in tasks such as pattern recognition in ancient artifacts, predictive modeling of architectural degradation, and immersive virtual reality reconstructions of historical sites.

He also stressed the importance of enhanced global communication and collaboration. “Cultural heritage belongs to all of humanity,” Quintero remarked. “It is essential that we work together across borders, sharing knowledge and resources to protect and celebrate our collective past.”

The symposium in Beijing served as a platform for scholars, researchers, and practitioners to exchange ideas on the integration of cutting-edge technologies in cultural preservation. Topics ranged from 3D scanning and modeling to digital archiving and the ethical considerations of virtual repatriation.

As Asia continues to experience rapid technological advancements, Quintero’s advocacy for increased AI integration resonated with many attendees. The symposium concluded with a consensus on the need to foster international partnerships and invest in innovative solutions to safeguard cultural heritage for generations to come.
