China is set to designate several pioneer cities to spearhead the large-scale application of the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS), according to a recent announcement by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
The initiative aims to demonstrate the integration of BeiDou in mass consumption, manufacturing, and emerging sectors such as industrial internet and artificial intelligence (AI). This move marks a critical phase in the marketization, industrialization, and internationalization of the BDS.
To empower industries with BeiDou, China plans to cultivate leading enterprises, enhance product quality, and build a robust industrial ecosystem. The pioneer cities will focus on three key areas: mass consumption, industrial manufacturing, and integrated innovation.
Boosting Mass Consumption
In the realm of mass consumption, the pilot cities will concentrate on integrating BeiDou technology into smartphones, wearable devices, tablets, shared mobility tools, and low-altitude drones. Enterprises are encouraged to develop and manufacture BeiDou-enabled devices to enrich product offerings and meet consumer demand.
Advancing Industrial Manufacturing
For industrial manufacturing, the cities will accelerate the application of BeiDou in automobiles, ships, aircraft, and robots. Local governments are urged to support the construction of platforms related to the internet of vehicles and intelligent networks, aiming to increase the adoption of BDS in commercial and passenger vehicles.
Fostering Integrated Innovation
In the field of integrated innovation, the initiative seeks to explore new scenarios for “BeiDou Plus” applications. This includes promoting innovative uses of the BeiDou system in emerging industries like the internet of vehicles, the internet of things, industrial internet, and AI.
These measures are expected to deeply integrate the BDS with new developments such as smart cities, intelligent transportation, smart logistics, smart maritime, and precision agriculture, fostering a new era of technological advancement and connectivity.
