China Pledges Continued Support for Stability in Haiti, Backs UN Resolution
China has reaffirmed its commitment to restoring stability in Haiti, with Lin Jian, spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, announcing on Tuesday that China is ready to continue working towards this goal. Lin’s statement came in response to inquiries about China’s support for the United Nations Security Council’s adoption of Resolution 2743.
Despite the absence of formal diplomatic relations between China and Haiti, China recently voted in favor of Resolution 2743, which extends the mandate of the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH) for one year. The resolution was passed unanimously by the UN Security Council on July 12.
“As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China has long approached the issue of Haiti with a responsible and constructive attitude, collaborating closely with the international community,” Lin Jian stated. “We supported the adoption of Resolution 2743, sending a positive signal that the international community will continue to support the people of Haiti.”
Following the passage of the resolution, Haiti expressed gratitude to China and acknowledged the constructive role it has played. Lin noted that Haiti is prepared to maintain contact and communication with China moving forward.
“China is willing to continue working to restore stability in Haiti and to support the Haitian people in finding a Haitian-led and Haitian-owned solution,” Lin emphasized.
Resolution 2743 calls on all Haitian stakeholders to urgently establish a provisional electoral council and reach an agreement on a sustainable, time-bound, and commonly accepted roadmap for elections. It also requests BINUH to develop a strategy on supporting a Haitian-led political process and to update the Security Council on its implementation in quarterly reports.
Established by the UN Security Council in 2019, BINUH is a special political mission tasked with advising the Haitian government on promoting and strengthening political stability and good governance, preserving a peaceful and stable environment, and protecting human rights.
