China has expressed strong opposition to the United States following the signing of a Xizang-related bill into law by U.S. President Joe Biden. The spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry announced on Saturday that China has lodged a formal protest with the U.S. regarding this matter.
On Friday, President Biden signed the “Promoting a Resolution to the Tibet-China Dispute Act” into law. This act endorses the concept of a “Greater Tibet,” a notion associated with the Dalai group, and mandates the U.S. government and the United States Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues to counter what it terms as “disinformation about Tibet” from the Chinese government. President Biden stated that the act “does not change longstanding bipartisan United States policy to recognize the Tibet Autonomous Region and other Tibetan areas of China as part of the People’s Republic of China.”
The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson criticized the act, stating that it violates the U.S. government’s long-held position and commitments, contravenes basic norms governing international relations, and grossly interferes in China’s domestic affairs. The spokesperson emphasized that the act undermines China’s interests and sends a severely wrong signal to forces advocating for “Tibet independence.”
“Xizang has been an integral part of China since ancient times,” the spokesperson asserted. “Affairs related to Xizang are purely China’s internal matters that brook no interference from external forces. The region enjoys social stability and harmony, robust economic performance, and the well-being of its people is protected. Xizang is making significant progress in governance, maintaining social stability, and achieving high-quality development. No one and no force should attempt to destabilize Xizang to contain and suppress China. Such attempts will never succeed.”
The spokesperson urged the United States to “take concrete actions to honor its commitments of recognizing Xizang as part of China and not supporting ‘Tibet independence.'” The spokesperson added, “The U.S. must not implement the act. If the U.S. continues down the wrong path, China will take resolute measures to firmly defend its sovereignty, security, and development interests.”
