Japanese AI scientist Kenmaru Suedomi, founder of Waseda AI Lab and a Global Shaper with the World Economic Forum, recently visited China as part of the 2024 Future Close-Up program. This high-level youth exchange initiative, hosted by the China International Communications Group Center for the Americas, the Hong Kong Federation of Liaoning Associations, and Tencent, aims to foster understanding and collaboration among young leaders.
During his visit, Suedomi explored Xiong’an New Area in north China’s Hebei Province, a region often referred to as the “city of the future.” Impressed by the rapid development and innovative spirit, he noted how the Chinese government is driving the construction of this smart city through effective public-private partnerships.
In an interview with CGTN’s Enoch Wong in Beijing, Suedomi shared his reflections on China’s approach to innovation. “What struck me most was the government’s commitment to putting people at the center of technological advancement,” he remarked. “The integration of AI and smart technologies in urban planning is not just about efficiency but enhancing the quality of life for residents.”
Suedomi expressed a desire to see similar initiatives in Japan, highlighting the potential benefits of such people-oriented innovation strategies. “China’s example shows how collaboration between the public and private sectors can accelerate progress,” he said. “It’s an approach that could greatly benefit our own urban development projects.”
His visit underscores the increasing interest among international scholars and professionals in China’s technological advancements and urban development models. As China continues to innovate, its experiences offer valuable insights for global audiences interested in sustainable and people-centric growth.
