Beijing, China — China’s Foreign Ministry has issued a stern warning to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), opposing what it describes as the alliance’s attempts to provoke conflict and undermine stability in the Asia-Pacific region.
Speaking at a regular press briefing on Wednesday, ministry spokesperson Lin Jian emphasized China’s stance against NATO extending its reach beyond its traditional Euro-Atlantic focus. “We firmly oppose NATO acting beyond its mandate as a regional defensive alliance and coming to the Asia-Pacific region to provoke conflict and confrontation, undermining the prosperity and stability of the region,” Lin stated.
The remarks come as NATO holds its 75th anniversary summit in Washington, D.C., from Tuesday to Thursday. Lin urged the alliance to reflect on its role in global affairs. “We advise NATO to do more for world peace, stability, and security,” he added.
China’s comments highlight growing concerns over NATO’s increasing engagement with Asia-Pacific partners and potential impact on regional dynamics. Analysts note that Beijing views such moves as a threat to its national security and regional interests.
Recent years have seen heightened tensions in the Asia-Pacific, with various global powers seeking to expand their influence. China’s firm opposition to NATO’s involvement underscores the complex interplay of geopolitical interests in the region.
As the international community watches developments from the NATO summit, China’s message serves as a reminder of the importance of respecting regional boundaries and promoting cooperative security measures.
