Love Across the Taiwan Strait: A Businessman’s Journey to Pingtan

For Cheng Sheng-chung, a resident of Taiwan, the decision to move to Pingtan in Fujian Province on the Chinese mainland was driven by more than just business opportunities—it was a matter of the heart. “The girl I love is here,” he says, reflecting on the journey that brought him across the Taiwan Strait.

Cheng met his love during a visit to Pingtan three years ago. Drawn by both personal and professional prospects, he decided to establish his business there, bridging his life between Taiwan and the Chinese mainland. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic and travel restrictions, Cheng persevered, nurturing his relationship and growing his enterprise.

Today, Cheng has found success in both love and career. His business in Pingtan is thriving, and he is looking forward to a future where cross-strait connections are stronger than ever. One of his heartfelt wishes is for the “Haixia” ferry, which once frequently sailed between the two islands, to resume passenger service. “The ferry not only connects places but also hearts,” he notes.

The “Haixia” ferry was a vital link across the Taiwan Strait, facilitating travel and fostering relationships between people on both sides. Its resumption would symbolize a significant step towards enhancing cross-strait ties and making stories like Cheng’s more common.

Cheng’s story is a testament to the enduring connections that transcend geographical boundaries. As he continues to build his life in Pingtan, he hopes that others will also be able to pursue their dreams across the strait, strengthening the bonds between Taiwan and the Chinese mainland.
