Beijing, China — Kenmaru Suedomi, founder of Waseda AI Lab and a recognized Global Shaper by the World Economic Forum, recently embarked on a transformative journey to China as part of the 2024 Future Close-Up program. This high-level youth exchange initiative, hosted by the China International Communications Group Center for the Americas, the Hong Kong Federation of Liaoning Associations, and Tencent, aims to foster cross-cultural understanding and collaboration among young leaders.
During his visit, Suedomi explored Xiong’an New Area in north China’s Hebei Province, often heralded as the “city of the future.” In an interview with CGTN’s Enoch Wong in Beijing, he shared his profound insights into China’s innovative approach to urban development and smart city construction.
“What struck me most was the government’s commitment to creating a people-oriented smart city,” Suedomi remarked. “The integration of public-private partnerships is driving innovation at an unprecedented scale. It’s not just about technological advancement but enhancing the quality of life for residents.”
Xiong’an New Area, established in 2017, is a state-level new area designed to relieve Beijing of non-capital functions and explore a new model of optimized development in densely populated areas. Suedomi was particularly impressed by how the Chinese government collaborates with private enterprises to implement cutting-edge technologies, ranging from AI-driven infrastructure to sustainable energy solutions.
“In Japan, we have been pursuing innovation, but seeing how China aligns its technological advancements with societal needs is truly inspiring,” he added. “I hope to see similar initiatives in Japan, where technology serves the people and contributes to a better future for all.”
Suedomi’s visit underscores the growing importance of international dialogue in addressing global challenges through technology and innovation. By witnessing firsthand China’s efforts in building smart cities that prioritize the well-being of their residents, he believes that such models can be adapted and applied beyond China’s borders.
The 2024 Future Close-Up program continues to bring together young leaders from around the world, fostering mutual understanding and paving the way for collaborative solutions to the pressing issues of our time.
