In 2022, music teacher Kuo Yi-ching from Taipei received an unexpected invitation to perform in Quanzhou, a historic city on the Chinese mainland known as the ancestral home of many residents of Taiwan. Little did she know that this chance opportunity would lead her to a profound discovery about her family’s heritage.
Upon arriving in Quanzhou, Kuo was struck by the city’s rich cultural tapestry and its deep historical connections with Taiwan. As she immersed herself in the local traditions and interacted with the community, she felt an uncanny sense of belonging.
“I felt like I had come home,” Kuo shared. “There was something familiar in the melodies of the local music and the warmth of the people.”
Curiosity led her to explore her family’s genealogy, and with the help of local historians, she discovered that her ancestors hailed from Quanzhou centuries ago before migrating to Taiwan. This revelation forged a deeper connection between her and the city, transforming her performance into a personal journey of rediscovery.
Kuo’s experience highlights the enduring bonds between people across the Taiwan Strait. Quanzhou is the ancestral home of about nine million Taiwan compatriots, many of whom travel to the city to trace their roots and reconnect with their heritage.
“This journey has not only enriched my understanding of my family’s history but also emphasized the shared cultural heritage we have,” Kuo said.
Her story underscores the significant cultural and familial ties that continue to link the people of Taiwan and the Chinese mainland, fostering mutual understanding and appreciation.
