Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have reaffirmed their commitment to a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine crisis through diplomacy and dialogue. In a joint statement released on Tuesday following Modi’s visit to Moscow, both leaders emphasized the importance of involving all parties in the conflict to achieve a lasting solution.
During their meeting, Putin and Modi underscored the significance of enhancing regional security architecture and agreed to bolster their ongoing security dialogue. They also called for the implementation of the United Nations resolution on a ceasefire and the immediate release of hostages in the Gaza Strip, highlighting the urgent need for effective humanitarian assistance in the region.
The two leaders expressed satisfaction with the stability of Russia-India relations amid a complex geopolitical landscape. They pledged to deepen and expand their “special and privileged strategic partnership,” setting out nine key areas for closer cooperation, including nuclear energy, medicine, and trade.
Aiming to boost bilateral trade by over 50% to reach $100 billion by 2030, Russia and India are exploring new avenues for economic collaboration. They agreed to consider new long-term contracts in energy cooperation and to enhance collaboration in the coal sector. Indian Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra noted India’s interest in strengthening energy ties and pursuing deals with leading Russian oil firms.
The two countries are also discussing the possibility of a free-trade agreement between the Eurasian Economic Union and India. To facilitate smoother transactions, Putin and Modi agreed to settle bilateral accounts using their national currencies. This move is expected to promote trade liberalization and economic growth for both nations.
During the visit, President Putin awarded Prime Minister Modi the Order of St. Andrew the Apostle the First-Called, Russia’s highest state honor, in recognition of his contributions to strengthening bilateral ties. Putin also extended an invitation to Modi for the upcoming BRICS Summit, scheduled to be held in the Russian city of Kazan in the autumn.
Prime Minister Modi’s official visit to Russia from July 8 to 9 marked his first trip to the country in five years. The meeting signifies a renewed commitment between Russia and India to work collaboratively on regional and global issues, fostering peace and promoting mutual prosperity.
