China’s Ministry of Finance (MOF) has allocated an additional 848 million yuan (approximately $118.9 million) to bolster local flood rescue efforts across several regions, according to an announcement made on Tuesday.
The funds, jointly allocated by the MOF and the Ministry of Water Resources, are designated to support rescue operations in flood-affected areas including Hunan, Jiangxi, Hubei, Guangdong, and other central, eastern, southern, southwestern, and northeastern regions. The resources will aid local authorities in their ongoing efforts to mitigate the impact of severe flooding.
Priority will be given to repairing water facilities and eliminating potential hazards to prevent further damage. Earlier this year, the MOF had already allocated funds in batches to assist local authorities with disaster relief work, demonstrating a continued commitment to supporting affected communities.
In Hunan Province, significant progress has been made in emergency response measures. Efforts to repair a breach in a dike at Dongting Lake, China’s second-largest freshwater lake, have been successful. The breach was effectively sealed on Monday night, and ongoing operations are focused on draining flooded areas and reducing remaining risks.
The National Fire and Rescue Administration has dispatched 219 rescue workers along with 72 fire trucks and flood drainage vehicles to Hunan Province to assist in the rescue operations. Their involvement is crucial in supporting local teams in safeguarding the well-being of residents and restoring normalcy to the affected regions.
