China is experiencing a significant surge in the adoption of new energy vehicles (NEVs), with a record 4.397 million NEVs registered in the first half of 2024, according to data released by the police. This marks a 39.41 percent increase compared to the same period last year, highlighting the nation’s commitment to greener transportation and its leadership in the global electric vehicle market.
By the end of June 2024, the total number of NEVs on China’s roads reached 24.72 million. All-electric vehicles are at the forefront of this growth, with 18.13 million units in operation, accounting for 73.36 percent of the total NEV population. This dominance underscores China’s position as a major player in the electric vehicle sector.
The surge in NEV registrations aligns with China’s broader environmental goals and initiatives to reduce carbon emissions. Government support, technological advancements, and growing consumer enthusiasm have all contributed to the robust growth in the NEV market.
In addition to the rise in NEVs, China also saw an increase in the overall number of motor vehicles and licensed drivers. As of June 2024, the country had 440 million motor vehicles in operation, including 345 million cars. The total number of licensed drivers reached 532 million, with 13.97 million new drivers obtaining their licenses in the first half of the year.
Urban centers are experiencing significant growth in car ownership. A total of 96 cities now have over one million cars each, eight more than the same period in 2023. Among these, 43 cities have surpassed two million cars, and 26 cities have over three million cars. Notably, Chengdu, Beijing, and Chongqing each have more than six million cars, while Shanghai, Suzhou, and Zhengzhou each boast over five million cars.
This rapid growth in NEV registrations and car ownership reflects China’s expanding economy and the increasing mobility of its population. As the nation continues to invest in sustainable transportation and infrastructure, the trends suggest a steady progression toward a greener and more connected future.
