Beijing, China — Elena Poliakova, a Russian assistant professor at the I\u00c9SEG School of Management in France, recently emphasized the critical importance of experiencing China firsthand to bridge cultural gaps between East and West. Participating in the 2024 Future Close-Up program, a high-level youth exchange initiative, Poliakova shared her insights on how direct engagement with China enhances understanding of its unique social, economic, and cultural landscapes.
Hosted by the China International Communications Group Center for the Americas, the Hong Kong Federation of Liaoning Associations, and Tencent, the Future Close-Up program brings together young leaders and scholars from around the world to foster cross-cultural dialogue and collaboration.
In an interview with Enoch Wong, Poliakova stressed that researchers and academics studying China should not rely solely on secondhand information. “To gain deeper insights and a more nuanced perspective, it’s essential to visit the country and experience it personally,” she said. “There are aspects of China’s development and culture that cannot be fully understood without being here.”
Poliakova’s visit included meetings with local businesses, educational institutions, and cultural organizations. Her interactions provided her with valuable firsthand experiences, which she believes are crucial for her academic work and for fostering mutual understanding between nations.
“Understanding China is not just about studying its economy or policies,” Poliakova added. “It’s about engaging with its people, experiencing daily life, and appreciating the nuances that make China unique.”
