Eight years ago, CGTN journalist Han Bin planted a tree on Zhaoshu Island, a small fishing community in the South China Sea. Returning to the island, Han Bin found that the tree had not only flourished but also symbolized the island’s transformation into a “green treasure island,” as described by the local fishermen.
“I am amazed at how much has changed,” Han Bin remarked. “The island is greener, and the community is thriving.”
Local fishermen shared stories of how environmental initiatives have rejuvenated the island’s ecosystem. The once barren landscapes are now covered with lush vegetation, providing shade and improving the habitat for local wildlife.
“Zhaoshu Island used to be mostly sand and rocks,” said Li Wei, a veteran fisherman. “Now, it’s filled with trees and plants. It feels like our own paradise.”
The greening of Zhaoshu Island is part of broader efforts to promote sustainable development in the region. Initiatives such as tree planting, conservation programs, and community education have played significant roles in this transformation.
Environmental experts believe that these efforts not only improve the ecological health of the island but also enhance the livelihoods of its residents by promoting tourism and preserving fishing resources.
As Han Bin walked through the now verdant landscapes, he reflected on the impact that dedicated environmental stewardship can have over time.
“The growth of this tree represents the growth of the island and its people,” he said. “It’s a testament to what can be achieved when we work together to protect and nurture our environment.”
Zhaoshu Island’s story is a compelling example of sustainable development and community-driven environmental improvement, offering insights and inspiration for similar initiatives across Asia.
